The eminent virologist John Enders, when asked to review one of Folkman’s early papers, reportedly told him not to worry about anyone stealing his ideas - they were “theft-proof” because nobody would believe them.
But these taunts didn’t deter him. And for over a decade, Folkman worked in relative isolation, insisting that the future of cancer treatment was cutting off blood supply rather than cutting out tumors.
He turned out to be right of course.
———-> sometimes I wonder where I’m so obviously calling someone a charlatan when they aren’t (the most obvious being peptides, ivermectin, etc)
On the one hand, 99/100 likely hurt patients. On the other hand, stories like these give people that tiny tiny sliver of hope
It’d probably be a fun (but very time-consuming) exercise to read Folkman’s paper & comb through the data & citations to see whether he was genuinely coming off as a crank or whether the skeptics just werent ready for the idea
But we’re supposed to be angry at some guy named Luigi for murdering a healthcare executive for putting profits about health. I used to be opposed to such extreme solutions. I still am, but I’m not feeling the empathy for the bean counter who was killed.

I’d wager he truly was proposing different ideas. A lot of revolutionary drugs do feel a little pariah like (IO circa 2005)
Just as interesting imo would be tracing the history of other pariahs to see if there were commonalities
Interesting as usual!!

This has nothing to do with the piece.
That history led to where we are today.
